NATURAL RESPONSES AFTER VICTIMIZATION

Over the next several months you may experience reactions that are very common and normal as a result of the trauma of victimization. They may include:

PHYSICAL REACTIONS

Fatigue Nightmares
Insomnia Hyperactivity
Under activity Startle- reactions

Health problems (such as change in appetite, headaches, digestive problems)

THINKING REACTIONS

Difficulty with concentration Memory disturbance
Difficulty solving problems Isolation
Difficulty making decisions Flashbacks

Inability to attach importance to anything except this incident

EMOTIONAL REACTIONS

Shock Anxiety
Denial Fear
Emotional numbing Depression
Over sensitivity Feelings of helplessness
Guilt Amnesia of the event

Anger - which may include revenge fantasies

These are normal reactions. While they may be painful and confusing, they are a part of the healing process. There is little anyone can do to help you avoid these uncomfortable feelings but there are things you can do to feel more comfortable.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THE HEALING PROCESS

Within the first 24-48 hours, periods of strenuous physical exercise alternated with relaxation may alleviate some of the physical reactions. Drink plenty of water. Some other ideas include:

buttonStructure your time --- keep busy.

buttonKeep a journal.

buttonReach out --- talk to supportive people --- talk is the most healing medicine.

buttonKeep your life as normal as possible.

buttonSpend time with others.

buttonGive yourself permission to feel rotten and share your feelings with others.

buttonBe aware of numbing the pain with over-use of drugs or alcohol. The situation doesn't
need to be complicated with a substance abuse problem.

buttonDo not make any big life changes.

buttonYou are normal and having normal reactions --- do not label yourself crazy.

buttonWhatever your feelings may be, honor them and do not minimize or discount them.

buttonDo not blame yourself
