Why USF?...
I was attracted to USF's central location in the state. I also found I would also be able to double major in my two perferred majors, biology and mathematics in five years. Additionally, I have family that was relatively nearby. |
 |
First Day...
Like many freshman, I was carrying a map around with me so I wouldn't get lost on campus. However, because I was taking all upper level courses, I was the only freshman in most of my courses. So many of the professors just handed out the syllabus, didn't go over it and started teaching on the first day. I was a little scared being away from home and from my family, but I got used to it. I had to realize that USF was going to be my new home. |

Living the campus life ...
I have lived on campus my entire time at USF; my first year was in Epsilon Hall and the other three years were in Cypress Suites. Thanks to my suitemates' influence, I became involved with the Residence Hall Association my sophomore year, and I was elected RHA Treasurer for the 2005-2006 school year. Since then, I have been elected RHA Director of Finance for the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school year. Each year I have lived in the residence hall, two out of my three roommates have been people I signed up to live with. Consequently, my experience has always been a good, and my roommates became my friends.

Student activities ...
I am currently involved with the Residence Hall Association as the Director of Finance, handling over $30,000 in a given year. This position allows me the experience of working closely with others, not only on our executive board but in our association and in the residence halls. I am involved with the National Residence Hall Honorary, which is an organization that allows me the opportunity to give back to my community while still being involved with my residence hall. With Alpha Epsilon Delta and American Medical Student Association, I am prepared for my life in the medical field. Both of these organizations show me many of the aspects, which I would have had to have waited for until medical school. All of the organizations help me to become a complete student.

 |
Activities ...
My friends and I are constantly busy with schoolwork and extracurricular responsibilities, so to get away from it all we head over to Chilis or Beef O'Brady's to spend time together. These restaurants provide a great hang-out and allow us to forget about our responsibilities, at least for an hour or so. |
 |
Transition ...
I lived on campus my freshman year and residence services placed me with a roommate who had similar interests as me. Consequently, my roommates and suitemates became my first friends at USF. Also, the extracurricular activities I had in high school I was able to find at USF and so I was able to continue my interests that I have had for so long. |
 |
Professors ...
I have had classes with over 300 students and others with as few as 12, but no matter what my professor will treat us as individuals. Also each professor is distinct in the way that they teach; powerpoint presentations, lectures, notes on the board, etc. I took a course on Vascular Plants with Professor Essig and was able to gain so much knowledge not only because he taught the course so well, but because he simply had a love for plants.
This love for plants was visible to the students, it made learning to me easier and more fun. |
 |
Multiculturalism ...
The cultural diversity allows me to meet new people that influence my outlook on life and bring a variety of perspectives to the public events that I participate in and help coordinate. |
 |
Metropolitan area ...
USF is close to downtown so it gives me a "big city" experience while keeping me humbled with the close-knit atmosphere of campus and the residence hall experience.
Additionally, I plan on working in the medical field as a research neurologist, however most medical research done with big corporations is typically found within the bigger cities. I also hope to work with the military, either the Army or the Air Force - and McDill Air Force Base is just a short drive away. |
 |
Global ...
USF has given me so much life experience and prepared me for the real world - a world that I hope to explore with my career. Without USF's assistance and guidance I would not be prepared for all the experiences that I will encounter when I graduate. Additionally, USF has a variety of cultural backgrounds at each campus, which has prepared me for a future job in any country, except for the language barrier. |
