Meet Our Students - Audrey
Year: |
Graduate Student |
| Hometown: |
Toulouse, France |
Major: |
French Literature |
Career goal: |
I want to be a French
professor in the USA. When I first arrived at USF I just wanted
to get my Masters degree, but now I have more ambition and I
will be a PhD student for the Spring semester. I owe this change
in my life to our French professors. These professors know their
students pretty well, and they do their best to encourage you to
be more ambitious and successful! |
Favorite campus hangout
or favorite past time in the Tampa area: |
I love to hang out at
West Shore Boulevard, all the beautiful houses make me dream, I
feel like the American dream is at reach here!
In USF, I love hanging out at the audio-visual office! I keep
learning with the staff how to use technology to be an awesome
TA! They are very patient and love helping me, even more because
I am an international student! |
Favorite
campus-wide event: |
I love the International
week, at the end of the academic year.
ISSS, Study abroad have a
huge one week celebration. We enjoy eating foreign food,
listening to different kinds of music, and above all sharing
with the other international students. |
List 3 things you love about Tampa, Florida, or the United
States: |
1. Tampa is like my
city, Toulouse. In Tampa, people take time to speak with you,
and they are so helpful!
2. I love the USA because if you have tons of projects in your
mind, Americans give you the opportunity to achieve them.
3. I love Florida because I do not like being cold in the winter
and Tampa is such a green city! |
3 things I love about USF: |
1. The
ISSS staff care
so much about international students, we are really like a big
family in USF.
2. The professors love to encourage you to go to conferences
abroad to share your work.
I actually met my first Indians here at USF. In my French city,
we do not have Indians there. I also learned a lot about their
culture and more important, thanks to USF international students
I learned how to speak with students coming from different
cultures.
3. Here, I meet the world everyday! |

Why USF?...
The French embassy asked me if I wanted to teach at USF, my friend was
already in the program, and she told me that the faculty members were
very helpful and motivating for academic research. As a TA, I contacted
our coordinator, Dr. Tucker, she was very nice, and now it’s been two
years, I still think that she does a tremendous job with us, she is so
open and reliable. |
 |
Research...
I am going to my first international conference in September. It will
be in England. The topic is “Radical Cultures and Local Identities in
Europe”. I will represent USF, sharing my work on the French Queen
Marie-Antoinette. This work was part of a directed study that I did with
our professor
Dr. Anne Latowsky. She helped me and motivated me so much
that I had to share my work with other university professors just to
thank her! |
 |
Student activities ...
I set up the French Club. I was also the President last year. When I
had to create the club, Student Government staff and the Office of
Involvement were so helpful… as English was not my primary language,
they were very supportive with me, and helped me to set up the club step
by step! I will never forget that!
I also give free French classes for USF students, I have USF students
participating in a French Congress every year, as I am also a judge in
this Congress.
I am also part of the “friends of Internationals” organization. I teach
French for free to international students, I am an officer and I help
organizing events. Through them I am also part sometimes of ISSS events
(like being in the committee that organizes the “International Week”).

Professors ...
Dr. Anne Latowsky was a fantastic supervisor for me! She was the one
who motivated me to apply for a PhD as she knew my potential, she helped
me when I was applying for a PhD program, she explained everything to
me, she helped me find out what I should do giving me advice, tips, and
asking me tons of questions! Without her, I probably would have chosen
the wrong path… She also encourages me a lot for my researches, I can
contact her at anytime, she has a strong sense of duty! |
 |
Have you made new friends
at USF, please share any special experiences or stories?
I actually have (too) many friends! It is such a big campus, but it is
a small world! I should count how many times I say “hello” per day… USF
is a very friendly university, as the students are happy to be here,
with a beautiful weather everyday, and lots of spots to hang out! |
 |
Do you have any other
special experiences or stories to share about your time at USF?
USF is my first American university, I am still very surprised to see
how much the University helps students to achieve personal projects, and
how much the professors help you to discover your own skills. |
 |
Most importantly, please tell us
why other students from France should choose USF?
French universities are definitely not willing to spend money for
their students. There are no grants to send the students abroad (to study or to
go to conferences). USF professors are always here for you, the programs are
wide and you are free to choose the classes you really want to choose, which is
not the case in our French universities! |
