Why USF?...
I wanted to attend USF since I was younger because of the
College of Medicine. I was actually a bit in the dark as to what kinds of majors I
could attain. Leila Amiri was so helpful in sorting things out and made
me glad I chose this school. |
 |
First Day...
My first day was a bit different than most. Being a bit older and just
out of an enlistment in the navy, I had little worries. I was more than
used to doing things on my own so USF just seemed like another step in
the right direction. Since the first place I went was the pool, I didn’t
even have to see a desk my first class (I had a swimming class!). |

Student activities ...
I’m the president of the USF Bullseyes, a new target shooting club on
campus. We’re dedicated to the safety, responsibility and recreation
surrounding our second amendment rights. We’re not a political group at
all. We just want to have some good clean fun while being safe. It’s
nice to build something from the ground and work to turn it into
something meaningful. It’s also a great way to meet some of the USF Police Department
officers who work so hard to keep us protected. I was also the Director
of Social Events for Premed American Medical Student Association.
There’s a lot of great information and opportunities to be gleaned from
them.

Activities ...
I like to go to Einstein’s for coffee. For entertainment I’m usually
just fine with talking with friends no matter what the location (though
the location seems to be in one lab or another as of late). |
 |
Professors ...
I have many professors I like. Dr. Schmidt has done an extraordinary
job taking me into her lab and helping me become a part of genetics
research ultimately geared towards learning more about cancer. Likewise,
Dr. Matthews has let me join his biophysics research group. He’s always
been an extremely caring professor and one of the greatest all-around
people I know. Sean and Susan McAveety, both of the math department,
have given me great help over the years. They’re also great to chat and
have a cup of coffee with. So many other professors, including Dr.
Cleveland, Dr. Baker, Spencer Fleury, Dr. Antilla, Dr. Bonaquisti, Dr.
Shackle, Dr. Upadhyaya, Dr, Sikorski, Dr. Vandenbergh and Dr. Scott
Lewis have been so helpful over my time here in helping me learn. |
 |
Research ...
I’ve been doing genetics research and am just starting biophysics
research as well. Research is exciting because you really get to make a
contribution to the academic world and beyond. The skills you learn are
extremely interesting and working as a group for a main goal is nothing
short of wonderful. I’m blessed to have people such as Dr. Schmidt and
Dr. Matthews to help make my college experience really worth something.
Besides, what could be more fun than playing with E. coli? |
 |
Multiculturalism ...
It’s nice to meet so many people from so many different backgrounds.
It helps to keep away much of the negativity in this world based on
empty stereotypes. |
 |
Metropolitan area ...
USF’s location has decided to make me move just a little closer to
campus, for starters! I wish to attend medical school so I’m
planning the next few years of my life around finding the balance
between proximity to campus while having enough distance for a quiet
home life. Of course, I have to be able to live somewhere that allows my
German Shepherd Dog, Sable, and my new puppy Boston Terrier, Cricket. |
 |
Global ...
USF has opened my eyes to opportunities in other countries. Although
my schedule’s a bit tight right now, I may one day want to do some traveling,
possibly in an academic capacity. World Regional Geography class with Spencer
Fleury was also excellent in teaching me much about contemporary world events. |
